Description
These small eastern flycatchers are one of the first returning migrants in spring in the northeast. We notice their bright, raspy call – “phoebe!” – standing out amidst the other sounds of summer. Their nests, tucked into hidden nooks of our barns and sheds, will likely be used year after year.
I took this photo in late May, 2023 in a wooded parking lot near Benson, Vermont. These phoebes were too busy in their courtship dance to care about me and my camera.
